Shivajinagar, January 23, 2024: In a joint effort aimed at enhancing transportation facilities, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Maha Metro have unveiled an ambitious plan to complete the construction of the Shivajinagar bus terminus within the next two-and-a-half years.
The existing terminus, which is currently located in Wakdewadi, is set to be relocated to its original site near the Shivajinagar railway station. Commuters have long voiced concerns about the accessibility of the current Wakdewadi location, leading to a meeting held last week in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to deliberate on the comprehensive plan.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawar, recognizing the importance of this project for the convenience of the public, directed Maha Metro to initiate the construction of the terminus. He also instructed MSRTC to formulate a plan for a multi-story building within the remaining area, which would house various government offices. It’s worth noting that MSRTC had previously transferred the land earmarked for the Shivajinagar terminus to Maha Metro for the construction of an underground Metro station. According to the initial plan, Maha Metro was tasked with constructing the MSRTC terminus after completing the underground station. Maha Metro officials have stated their commitment to finalizing the execution plan in close collaboration with MSRTC.
Originally, the Shivajinagar MSRTC station occupied a total area of four acres, with one acre set aside for the construction of an underground Shivajinagar metro station, as outlined in the agreement between Maha-Metro and MSRTC. The Pune Metro project falls under the jurisdiction of Maha-Metro.
Subsequently, following the demolition of the original Shivajinagar station, it was relocated to the premises of the Dairy Development Department in Wakdewadi, which is situated 1.5 kilometers away from the initial depot. This relocation took place in December 2019.
According to the terms of the agreement, the Dairy Development Department was entitled to receive rent for a period of three years. Interestingly, while the Shivajinagar metro station has since become operational, the MSRTC station in Wakdewadi has been in use for almost four years.
Officials involved in the project have conveyed the need for further clarity on the actual construction process as the project moves forward.
Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole has offered assurance to the public, affirming that the bus terminus will soon return to its original location. He emphasized that a comprehensive plan is currently in progress for both the construction of the terminus and the development of a multi-story building to meet various administrative needs.
This collaborative effort between MSRTC and Maha Metro signifies a significant step towards improving transportation infrastructure and enhancing the overall commuting experience for the people of Shivajinagar and beyond. The anticipated completion of the bus terminus and related developments promises to make travel more convenient and efficient for all.
