Certain rules apply to passengers travelling with Indian Railways. Passengers should be aware of the train ticket rules that apply to them. Railway Ticket Transfer
If you have a confirmed rail ticket and cannot travel due to some reason, there is some good news. Indian Railways allows you to transfer your confirmed rail ticket to someone else. Most people aren’t aware of this service offered by Indian Railways. As a result, when they cannot travel after booking a train ticket, they end up cancelling the ticket. They can always book a new train ticket later when they travel. Sometimes, getting a confirmed train ticket might be a challenge in India. Since confirmed train tickets are valuable, Indian Railways came up with the ticket transfer service. With the ticket transfer service, your confirmed train ticket will not go in vain.
There are certain conditions for transferring a train ticket to someone else. The first rule is that the train ticket should be confirmed. With a confirmed train ticket, you will have a specific seat allotted in your name. The second rule is that a train ticket can only be transferred to someone in a blood relation. One can transfer a train ticket to the following people in a blood relationship:
- Father
- Mother
- Brother
- Sister
- Son
- Daughter
- Husband
- Wife
One cannot transfer a confirmed train ticket to a friend or a far-off relative. For transferring a train ticket, one must request at least a day before the train departure. If less than 24 hours are left for the departure of the train, the ticket will not be transferred to someone else. After submitting the request, your name will be stricken from the train ticket. Instead, the name of the new passenger will be included on the respective train ticket.
Another rule for train ticket transfer is that it is available only once. For each confirmed train ticket, you can only transfer it to someone else once. Once a train ticket is transferred to someone else, it cannot be transferred to someone else.
Steps to Transfer a Train Ticket
It is crucial to note that one cannot transfer the train ticket to someone else online. You will have to visit the physical train station to transfer a confirmed train ticket to someone else. The steps required to transfer a train ticket to someone else are as follows:
- Take a printout of your train ticket. You cannot expect to show the e-ticket on your smartphone and transfer it to someone else. Railway officials will ask for a physical copy of your train ticket, so ensure you have a printout.
- Visit the reservation counter of the railway station with the printout of your ticket. You can visit the nearest railway station to transfer your train ticket. Even if the boarding point in the ticket is another station, you will get your ticket transferred.
- At the reservation counter, you will have to provide ID proof of the person to whom you want to transfer the train ticket. You can show the Aadhar card, voter ID card, or other proof at the reservation counter.
- Ask for a ticket transfer at the reservation counter and wait for a while. The railway representative will inform you when the train ticket transfer is complete.
After a train ticket transfer is done, one can check the details online. Enter your PNR number on any website, and the name of the new passenger will appear on the ticket. The new passenger is now obligated to travel on the same confirmed train ticket. Tatkal or RAC train tickets cannot be transferred to someone else.
