Why do Indian Railways launch special trains at times?
Before discussing the special summer train between Delhi and Punjab, let us understand the concept of special trains in India. Special trains are the ones which do not run throughout the year. Also, they might not be included in the regular train timetable advertised by the Indian Railways. Special trains are announced suddenly by the Indian Railways during peak travel days/seasons. Once the peak travel season gets over, special trains might be withdrawn by the Indian Railways. Special trains usually do not replace regular trains in India. Special trains run along with regular trains to manage the increased number of passengers. Special trains are also launched by Indian Railways during emergencies.
Here are some occasions during which special trains are launched by the Indian Railways:
- The number of passengers travelling to different locations in India increase during festive seasons. People working or studying in different cities tend to return to their homes during the festive season. For the same rationale, Indian Railways launch special trains during Diwali, Dussehra, Durga Puja, New Year, and other festivals.
- During the summer and winter vacations, the number of train passengers in India increases. To accommodate the increased number of passengers, special trains are launched during summer and winter holidays.
- Indian Railways can launch special trains during emergencies. These emergencies could be anything, from natural calamities to unexpected accidents. During the recent COVID period, the government launched several special trains to help people get back to their homes.
- Special trains might be launched to fulfil the needs of business travellers. Such trains are usually fast and available at frequent intervals to passengers travelling for business purposes.
- To help pilgrimage travellers in India, special trains are launched. Special trains are launched on those routes where pilgrimage travel is high.
