In a remarkable stride towards female empowerment, Karnataka’s Congress government has launched its flagship “Shakti” scheme, allowing women to travel for free on non-luxury public transport buses. This innovative initiative has had varying impacts on women hailing from different regions and social backgrounds. We take a closer look at what a fare-free bus ride symbolizes for women across Karnataka.
With a sense of anticipation, Parvathamma clutched her Aadhaar card tightly as she stood at the Shivamogga town bus station. Her destination was Holalkere, located in Chitradurga district, a central region of Karnataka. She was among the many women waiting to avail themselves of this groundbreaking scheme on the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses.
Key Highlights of the Shakti Scheme:
- Economic Empowerment: For women like Parvathamma, the Shakti scheme translates into economic empowerment. By eliminating transportation costs, the scheme not only eases the financial burden but also opens up new opportunities for education, work, and social engagement.
- Increased Mobility: The scheme’s zero-fare structure has vastly improved mobility for women. It allows them to move freely within the state, be it for personal reasons or professional pursuits. The enhanced mobility contributes to women’s independence and self-reliance.
- Equal Access: The Shakti scheme is a symbol of equality, ensuring that women from diverse socio-economic backgrounds can access public transportation without discrimination. This equal access fosters a sense of inclusivity and unity among women.
- Safety and Security: Many women express how the scheme makes them feel safer during their travels. The presence of more women on buses, driven by the scheme, creates a secure environment, reducing the likelihood of harassment.
- Social Impact: Beyond the tangible benefits, the Shakti scheme has had a profound social impact. It promotes gender equality, encourages women’s participation in public life, and challenges traditional gender roles. Women’s increased visibility on public transport is a step towards normalizing their presence in all spheres of society.
- Inspiration and Aspiration: For young girls, the scheme serves as both inspiration and aspiration. Witnessing women accessing public transportation without financial constraints broadens their horizons and encourages them to pursue their dreams.
- Environmental Benefits: With more women choosing public transport due to the Shakti scheme, there are positive environmental implications. Reduced reliance on personal vehicles decreases carbon emissions and contributes to a greener, sustainable future.
- Government Commitment: The Shakti scheme is a testament to the government’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. It underscores the importance of providing women with equal opportunities and resources.
