About Pournami Festival
Pournami, also known as full moon day, holds a significant cultural and religious importance in Tamil Nadu. Lakhs of devotees gather at Arunachaleswarar Temple. The highlight of the Pournami celebrations in Tiruvannamalai is the sacred circumambulation of the Annamalaiyar Hill, known as Girivalam. Thousands of devotees from all walks of life undertake this spiritual journey, walking barefoot around the base of the hill, which spans a distance of approximately 14 kilometers. The atmosphere during the Girivalam is electrifying, with chants of hymns, the sound of bells, and the fragrance of incense filling the air. Devotees carry offerings such as flowers, coconuts, and incense sticks as they make their way around the hill, seeking blessings and spiritual fulfillment.
